Driving Emergencies

Most important rule: Don't Panic!
When an emergency happens, you'll have a better chance of handling it safely if you don't let fear take over.
Here are some how-to's in various situations.
Tire Blowout
 


Loss of a Wheel

 


Steering Failure

Tire Blowout

  • Hold steering wheel firmly and ease foot off the gas pedal.
  • If your vehicle skids, handle it as you would on ice or snow.
  • Don't use your brake until your vehicle is under control.
  • Get off the road as soon as it is safe to do so.

Loss of a Wheel

  • Handle as you would a blow-out

Steering Failure

  • If your vehicle suddenly stops responding to the steering wheel
  • Ease your foot off the gas pedal Turn your flashers uncap your foot off the brake for as long as possible. (The vehicle's natural balance should keep it going straight, but a sudden change in speed should spin it out of control)
  • As the vehicle slows, you may brake very gently to bring it to a stop.

Brake Failure

  • Your brake pedal suddenly sinks to the floor
  • Try pumping it to build up pressure
  • Gently use your emergency or parking brake
  • Shift to a lower gear to slow you down

Headlight Failure

  • Your headLights suddenly go out
  • Try your parking Lights, flashers and directional signals (they may give you enough light to get safely off the road.
  • If your headlight begin to dim have them checked out

Stuck Gas Pedal

  • Hook your toe under the pedal and see if you can free it.
  • Shift into neutral and use brake to slow down and get off road
  • Do not turn off key as you will lose power steering.

Running off the Pavement

  • Your wheels drifted off the pavement and onto the shoulder.
  • Don't yank the steering wheel back
  • Ease your foot off the gas and brake gently.
  • When it is safe steer gently back onto the pavement

Vehicle approaching head-on

  • Slow down
  • Pull to the right and sound horn
  • Don't swing to the left lane as the other vehicle may recover and be in that lane too.

Stalling on Railroad Tracks

  • If a train is coming
  • Get out of vehicle and off the tracks
  • Run as far away as you can in the direction of the train (if you run the other way your may be hit by debris from your car which will explode when the train hits it.)

Going into Water

  • A vehicle will float for  a while
  • Unfasten seat belt and escape through window (do not open the door)
  • If the vehicle sinks, climb to the rear seat where an air pocket should form.
  • Escape though a window once the vehicle is settled.
  • As you rise to the surface , breath out in small breaths until you surface.

Fire

  • If you see smoke or flames
  • Turn off ignition and get away from the car
  • Call Fire Department
  • Trying to fight the fire yourself can be dangerous

Blocked Vision

  • Your hood suddenly pops up and you can't see
  • Roll down window, turn on flashers
  • Pull carefully of the road, looking through the side window
